Platinum Hotel Balikpapan

May 21, 2016
Review of my stay-cation experience at Platinum Hotel in Balikpapan, Indonesia last weekend.

Newly built, Platinum Hotel is clean and comfortable 4 star hotel in Balikpapan. I love the fact that the floor and room I stayed in are naturally lit. Natural lighting is the way to my heart because it just makes the whole room feels more airy and spacious. Even though the Deluxe room is originally spacious.

Another plus point is their minimal and balanced design. They combine the use of light coloured wooden furniture with yellow lighting and dark linen and decor to create simple and clean design while adding a hint of elegance and class to the ambiance at the same time. I’d say it’s perfect for the middle class – doesn’t look entirely classy but it doesn’t look cheap either.

I had one of the most enjoyable stay in Balikpapan here. My family and I fancy Balikpapan heaps and we often find excuses to spend the weekend over at the city. Naturally, we’ve tried a number of hotels and Platinum Hotel is almost my favourite so far. Almost on par with Novotel Balikpapan, which offers a relaxed ambiance with a lovely sea view.

The room is comfortable. Amenities are new, clean and well maintained. Service staff were really helpful and polite, too. The Front Office escorted us to our rooms and personally ensure our needs were met upon check in, which was helpful because the room key of one of our rooms were faulty. Toilet is clean, too!

Thing is the hotel location is rather far from the city centre. If you’re planning to stay here, it’d be good if you have a car. Unlike Jatra Hotel, which is located right next to Superblock shopping centre Balikpapan, Platinum Hotel is located in the middle of no where. Your choice of entertainment and late night snacks is limited to the hotel lounge here.

The rate is reasonable. I booked through Agoda for IDR 450k* per night for Deluxe room without breakfast. For the level of service and newly built facilities, it’s worth it. Breakfast for 2 comes at additional IDR 220k*. But my family and I prefer to explore Balikpapan local delights than having an expensive and mediocre breakfast at the hotel.

To summarise, Platinum Hotel Balikpapan is a good choice for a weekend trip. It’s suitable for family and young adults who value quality time and comfort. I reckon it’s a good thing that it’s located a little out of town. Far from the crowd and noise, the comfortable and clean room will help you relax and make you feel fresh to start working again. The friendly staff, good service and affordable rate are a plus, too.

So, don’t hesitate to give Hotel Platinum a try if you’re looking for a place to stay in Balikpapan this weekend. Make sure to let me know what you think afterwards! 😉
