NeNe Chicken: Bulgogi Flavour Korean Fried Chicken, Melbourne CBD

October 17, 2015

One of South Korean’s famous fried chicken franchise has expanded its kingdom to Australia and I can’t be more thankful. Officially crowning NeNe’s Bulgogi Chicken with the title of the Best Korean Chicken in Melbourne.

NeNe Chicken Specialty

As a fan of fried chicken (Korean ones especially), I was looking forward to trying this one. Initially, I was disappointed to find out their signature Snowing Cheese Chicken isn’t in the menu in Australia – I mean how can they not? Why?

However, after trying out almost all the flavours, with the Original and Bulgogi being my favourites, I am convinced NeNe Chicken is still the best Korean fried chicken in town even without its much raved Snowing Cheese topping.

Served with radish, cabbage and mustard sauce, the Original Chicken is crispy and juicy even after an hour! Interestingly, despite the thick and rich coat of sauce, their Swicy (Sweet & Spicy) and Bulgogi Chicken are also crispy after about an hour. Their Swicy leans more on the sweet side though, and is too sweet for my preference. If you’re after something spicy, you should try their Freaking Hot Chicken instead.

Pocket Friendly

Price wise, like most Korean fried chicken it’s on the steep side. Though similarly priced, it is slightly cheaper in comparison to other renown Korean fried chicken franchise such as Gami. NeNe however offers more variety and options when it comes to flavours and portions.

Unlike most Korean chicken places that offer either half or whole chicken, NeNe provides meal packages – Regular ($11.95/$13.45 for 4 pcs), Large ($17.95/$19.95 for 8 pcs) and Jumbo ($30.95/$33.95 for 16 pcs). Combo meal with chips or salad and a drink is also available at additional costs – $4.95 for regular combo and $6.95 for a large combo. This is a big plus point for me because I can now fulfill my cravings without depending on others to share!

The wait time isn’t usually long but they are always packed. Getting seats would be a challenge because the seating area is awfully small in the CBD branch. I’d recommend to take away and find a cosy spot under the sun (like the beautiful grass patch in front of State Library) to have it picnic style. The weather’s been very supportive lately, make the best out of it people!

Oh, don’t forget to grab some plastic gloves and wet tissue from the side counter. Extra points for the simple and thoughtful act. Bravo NeNe!

Best Korean Fried Chicken Franchise?

So.. what do you think? Does NeNe Chicken sounds like the perfect Korean fried chicken franchise to you?

Well, aside from the small CBD space, which makes it uncomfortable for me to eat in, I think NeNe Chicken is one of the best Korean fried chicken in town. A must try pocket friendly and super yummy one at it.
