In the midst of packing and moving Nia and I headed down to see award winning CATS The Musical last Wednesday, 23rd December 2015 at Regent Theatre. We think the contemporary musical is highly spectacular and had such a good time unwinding, of course! Here’s more of it.
It’s been a while since my last theatrical experience, probably even longer for Nia. We heart the theatre so but realistically speaking as poor students we often have to wait for the perfect opportunity or even miss them since saving up never work for me, there are always more things to lust after and buy. You feel me, right?
So, this time we are extremely thrilled to witness the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS in Melbourne soon after its opening on 18 December 2015. Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, CATS The Musical comes to Australia for a strictly limited season, touring to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth after its Melbourne show.
Receiving excellent reviews in the West End, CATS extended its season due to overwhelming demand. Its most recent season, which was reworked by the original creative team showcases impressive blend of traditional and modern theatrical elements – from talented singers, immaculate live orchestra and a variety of repertoire to modish ensemble with flawless gymnastic feats. It is only natural that the hit revival was nominated for the 2015 Olivier Award, defining modern-day musical theatrical experience.
The fourth longest running show in Broadway history CATS is jaw dropping! I mean, how can it not? Starring the ever so gorgeous and talented Australian singer-songwriter (a.k.a. The Voice Goddess) Delta Goodrem as Grizabella, we expected to see overflowing singing talents only to be surprised by endless variety of eye popping extravaganza, striking acrobatic performances and fancy dance moves including tap-dancing!
We were so awed by the well balanced and employment of genre variety too that highlight and bring each cats’ personality to life. The impressive musical team brought various genres including hip-hop and rap, accurately balancing the dynamics, pitch and tempo of repertoire through the use of silence dramatising only the important scenes as well as adapting the context to make it relevant for a modern-day audience.
We love the theatrical use of lights to set the mood as well as its interactive setting. Keep your eyes open, look around and refrain from patting the wandering/sleeping cats. It’s hard, we know. Ten thumbs up for the multi talented musical actors and actresses! Impactful acting as cats, dancing and singing in every style possible, acrobatic performances, they nailed it all. How impeccable!
The storyline is simple. Based on T. S. Eliot’s book titled Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who gather every year to make the “Jellicle Choice”, and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
With the combination of the spectacular acrobatic performances, the credible acting and variety of musical numbers, we didn’t even have time to blink. Our favourite part about the musical is definitely the perfectly synchronised live orchestra and Delta’s splendid singing parts. Wish we could rewind all of her scenes!
We had a well deserving break from the busy past weeks no doubt.
